Presidents Award: Trenton 250
The development of the Trenton250 Vision Element was an ambitious outreach effort designed to create consensus around a community-driven vision. The vision statement and guiding principles sets the direction for the City and will guide the creation of all future master plan elements as well as city policies, programs, and projects. The introduction of a stand-alone vision element to which all subsequent master plan elements must align is a new paradigm for New Jersey municipal master plans. The Trenton250 Vision Element is a model for outreach efforts in diverse economically-disadvantaged communities with historic barriers to civic engagement and no comprehensive long-term vision.
Outstanding Implemented Plan Award: Roosevelt Plaza Park
While the redevelopment of Roosevelt Plaza Park has generated positive feelings among downtown residents, employees, and visitors, the park suffers from underutilization and a lack of amenities, resulting in a park that people walk through‚ rather than to. Inspired by examples of new, active public spaces in other post-industrial centers that developed by taking small, iterative, and temporary steps, Cooper’s Ferry Partnership, Group Melvin Design, and Sikora Wells-Appel sought to implement low-cost, high impact amenities to make Roosevelt Plaza Park a central destination for the City of Camden.
