Last month, Group Melvin Design and our friends at Econsult Solutions enjoyed a beautiful day on the streets of Philadelphia for PARK(ing) Day PHL. PARK(ing) Day is an annual daylong global event where citizens, artists, and activists temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. 2017 was a milestone year for PARK(ing) Day PHL, as it marked the 10th year of the event’s celebration in Philadelphia.
We set up our “balloon room” on the 1600 block of Locust Street, right up the street from the 15-16th Street PATCO Station. Since we often help communities perform public outreach, we decided to reach out to the passerby on Locust Street and ask them their favorite thing about Philadelphia, or one thing they’d change to make Philly even better. As each comment card was attached to a balloon string, a forest of Philly love emerged around the balloon room. Visitors lingered in our PARK(ing) space, experiencing the unique feeling of being surrounded by balloons on a city street, and reading the many thoughtful (and sometimes funny!) comments.
We had a great time talking to Philadelphians about why they love their city, sharing our experiential display, and visiting some of the other amazing PARK(ing) spaces around Center City. Check out a few more photos from PARK(ing) Day 2017 below!
